Backlinks are a powerful component of website search optimization and having a strategy to build them can make you even more successful in the search engines.
What is a backlink?
A backlink is a link to your website that appears on another website. The more people and sites who backlink to your website, the better it is for your search engine ranking. That’s because to Google, having a backlink to your website counts as a “vote” to say that your website is important to others. Backlinks also drive more traffic to your website to help with your Google ranking. Therefore, building backlinks can be a positive SEO strategy for any website.
Backlinks are not equal.
Google has a complicated algorithm for determining the relevance (PageRank) of any website with your backlink. Backlinks should ideally come from respectable internet sources. Backlinks from spammy, fly-by-night sites that were just launched will not do anything for your ranking. Industry specific sites carry more weight with Google, as do sites with high content quality and those that are popular and well-trafficked.
Many businesses are taken in by SEO companies that offer hundreds of backlinks for a low cost. These links are usually frivolous and have no results in the search engines. Backlink building cannot and should not be done overnight, but over time as part of a strategy. A good Chicago internet marketing company can help you create a quality backlink strategy that will yield many top results in Google.
Your backlinks contain anchor text which usually includes SEO keywords. Anchor text is the words you use to produce the link. For example, our anchor text above is “Chicago internet marketing company”. People may search and find the exact match of the phrase. We call this an “exact match anchor text.” Here are four other kinds of backlinks you can use in your content:
- Partial match anchor text. In our case this might be “internet marketing company in Chicago offering backlink strategy” but it is found for “Chicago SEO company”
- Unrelated phrase: “click here” or “learn more”.
- Actual url address.
- Image Link—Use keywords and anchor text in the alt text field when naming images.
Ideally, you should vary the type of backlinks you use in your strategy so your efforts will appear natural to Google.
