1. Make a general list of relevant topics based on your company and the industry you serve.

To start, this list of topics doesn’t have to be long or all-inclusive, just a few topics that are relevant to the industry that you serve. Simply identify areas of your particular industry that you believe are important to your potential clients. These can be general topics just to get the ball rolling on your keyword analysis process.

 

2. Use this list to develop keywords based on your services.

Next, take this list of topics and narrow down keywords that related to the services that your company has to offer. For example, if you are a custom home builder, you may want to consider keywords and phrases such as home construction, home additions, general contractors, etc.

 

3. Research related keywords and search terms and add them to your list.

This step is important especially if you are struggling with step 2. An easy way to fill out your keyword list with terms that you may not have thought of is to go to Google.com and search for the specific topics that you already have on your list. At the bottom of the page, you should see a section titled “Searches related to” that includes a number of other keywords for you to consider.

 

4. Use Google to see where you currently rank on these topics and devise a further strategy.

Once you believe that you have put together a comprehensive keyword list for your company, do a check to see where your company currently ranks on these phrases. You can do this by searching each of these terms and phrases separately or by using the Google AdWords Keyword Planner to see where your website ranks.
